Sotheby's Important Watches auction takes place on December 7, and Phillips New York Auction: Nine happens on December 9–10. Both have public previews at their New York locations prior to the sale. Wind's watches are worth the one-hour drive north to Palm Beach. If you've been in the watch world a little while you already know who he is and the world-class examples he sells. What I like most about Wind is that he's just as keen on the scholarship of horology as the business side. Jean-Jacques Cartier, who led the Cartier London branch from 1945 until 1974, was in line with this creative spirit pulsing through London at the time. In the mid-1960s, he decided that the branch should begin to produce its own wristwatches (this was also when the Cartier business was being split into separate New York, Paris, and London branches). Until 2019, the movement of the 5711 had a problem, by modern standards: It didn't have a hacking seconds function to set the time. Okay, there was this "hack" – apply some pressure to the back of the crown and it'd stop the seconds hand from ticking. But that's not quite the same, is it? Yes, it wasn't the end goal of fully hand-made quite yet. But it should have been obvious by that point that the sky could be the limit for Felipe Pikullik. Did you know pandas have an extended wrist bone that they use like a thumb to help them grip food? Whether you wear your watch above or below the wrist bone or have an extra wrist bone to help you grip your bamboo, the new Overseas "panda" chronograph will probably work for you and is a release that, to me, seems worth the wait.
The case design remains the same, featuring a cushion-style compressor case made from grade 2 titanium. It's certainly a light watch at 62g in weight. The case measures 41mm in diameter, with a lug-to-lug distance of 45mm, and a case height of 12.5mm. Having lived with my own Glassbox chronograph, I remain impressed by just how comfortable the bracelet is and how naturally it drapes on the wrist. The dial, as mentioned earlier, feels unconventional in color at first glance, but I appreciate the specificity of the reference. I am not usually one to throw around disparaging remarks about larger case sizes, but 40mm is just a better fit for a larger cross-section of wrists. The 45mm Cubitus is a lot of watch, and when seen from a bird's-eye view (like all watches are!), often extends beyond the top of the wrist. A 40mm square is bold but wearable for most. With this limited edition, Tudor is again making a not-so-subtle statement that it wants to be the brand associated with the sport. This is the second cycling-themed limited-edition carbon chronograph from Tudor in the last two months, and suddenly it feels like the Rolex sister brand is leaning heavily on small-batch special editions to keep interest piqued and supply limited. The feeling of being carried by the wind through the waves on an old old wooden ship just felt right. Aware of the historical connection, we came prepared. Not only did we have the new Skipper on hand, but we also had a ref. 7754 (courtesy of Mr. Clymer), and also our own Skipper LE. The trio really showed the power of this design.
billig omega speedmaster Grand Seiko, ever the romantic, lists the once-a-month astronomical phenomenon of tsuki tenshin as the direct inspiration for the SBGY009's midnight blue dial with a stamped sunray pattern. The Nivada Grenchen Datomaster is one of those "cult-classic" vintage watches, the type of thing we'd feature on old Bring A Loupe columns when they popped up for sale, which wasn't often. That's why I've enjoyed modern Nivada Grenchen bringing this design back at a more accessible, Mecaquartz-powered price – it's a way to get a quirky, slightly obscure vintage design for a few hundred bucks instead of a few thousand.
